“Marriagability Money” Printing Block
The traditional belief in regard to a woman remaining unmarried to an unusual age was that her “problems” were caused by a husband in a past life, which they believed could have taken place centuries ago. For some reason, the long-deceased spouse feels that the woman owes him a debt, most easily expressed as a debt of money. Until the debt is paid, the spouse will interfere with the life of the woman. He will bring bad luck in general, but particularly in regard to her finding a husband. The only way to remove this negative interference was to “repay the debt” to the satisfaction of the heavenly spouse. To do this, the woman obtains a hand-carved wood-block with which she can make numerous imprints on rice paper. (This is a variety of the “ghost money” burned as an offering to deceased ancestors.) The imprints are burned in a ritual setting. When the vengeful husband feels that a sufficient amount of “money” has been sent to him, he will remove his negative influence. The woman then will advance to a better life and soon acquire a husband (hopefully, one who will not bother her from the “other world” at some later date in some later life).
